Damien Cain’s Second Act: Gothic, Metal and a Queer Pop-Rock Reckoning

Damien Cain’s story has never followed a straight line. The German-born artist now based in Ireland has moved through underground rock, gothic atmosphere, melodic metal and theatrical concept work with a persistence focused purely on artistic identity. His latest musical chapter represents a significant creative reckoning.

With the album Standarte, Cain steps forward under his own name with a record that gathers the different eras of his music into one sharply defined statement. The project combines a gothic atmosphere with a metal spirit, delivering an emotionally direct performance that unites the fragments of his musical past.

Cain first emerged from the European underground scene with the progressive art-rock project Celtic Crypt before gaining wider recognition under the name CAIN. The project’s breakthrough single “Age of Darkness” became a cult favourite within the dark alternative community, selling more than 250,000 copies across Europe and receiving an IMPALA Diamond Award for independent sales.

That legacy has frequently carried a theatrical edge. Cain previously collaborated with Sir Christopher Lee, who performed his song “Elenore”, a classic-pop-crossover single that placed Cain’s writing in the orbit of an iconic gothic cinema figure. He also worked with Wayne Hussey of The Mission on the album Moonstruck, entered the official German charts several times, and was involved in the first German-language Dracula musical as librettist, lyricist and performer.

After relocating to Ireland, Cain’s music shifted inward, leading to more personal, reflective material. Standarte is the result: a record that bridges alternative rock, melodic metal, post-wave melancholy and cinematic textures. The album was created as an international collaboration involving musicians from Ireland, the UK, Germany, Finland, the USA and South America, mixed and mastered at Hellfire Studios in Dublin. It also celebrates 25 years since “Age of Darkness” by including three new songs by CAIN.

The international response has proven strong. SLAM Magazine named Standarte “Album of the Month”, calling it “a masterpiece between dark rock and Irish folk”. Sonic Seducer highlighted “Less ornament, more substance”, while Australia’s HEAVY Magazine simply called it “an absolutely amazing album”. Standarte subsequently entered both the American and German Alternative Charts in early 2026, climbing to #4 in the US listings and gaining over a million YouTube views within weeks of release.

On May 29, 2026, this second act takes an intimate turn with the release of Caleb (JD Radio Edit), a new duet with UK vocalist Jamie Wiltshire. Produced by Jay Dixie, the track plays out as a pop rock ballad about by memory, love and loss.

The collaboration came about almost by accident. Cain initially approached Wiltshire to contribute backing vocals, but hearing his voice changed the direction of the song entirely. “There was something in his voice that immediately felt like a second perspective,” Cain recalls. “It didn’t feel like support, it actually felt like a conversation.” What followed was a remote collaboration across distance between two artists from different musical backgrounds who have never met in person, building a performance that sounds like a shared memory.

The single’s male-to-male perspective aligns with its late-May launch date. This artistic direction stems directly from personal reflection, focusing on the universal experiences of memory and absence without using commercial slogans. This grounded approach also connects with Cain’s ongoing personal support for akt, the UK charity helping LGBTQ+ young people facing homelessness or hostile environments. Ultimately, Standarte and Caleb reveal an artist stepping into a space where history, influence and identity finally align.

Standarte is available on all major digital platforms. Caleb, the new duet by Damien Cain and Jamie Wiltshire, is out now on all streaming platforms via ffm.to/damiencain_caleb. For more information and updates, visit the official Damien Cain Bio Link.
