The Barrett Group reports that the number of financial services executives acquiring AI skills has soared by 80% in the past year
SAN FRANCISCO. June 2, 2025 - The number of financial services executives acquiring AI skills has surged by 80% over the past year, according to the latest industry update from The Barrett Group.

This rapid growth highlights the growing importance of technological expertise in the sector. Executives in Banking, Investment Banking, and International Trade and Development are leading this transformation, with AI skill adoption rising by 153%, 136%, and 141%, respectively, year-on-year.

The Barrett Group - a premier executive career management firm - estimates that approximately 1.3 million executives are active in the broader financial services market.

With a 3% increase in executive ranks over the past year and nearly 59,000 job transitions, the firm calculates that total executive opportunities in the sector reached around 100,000 positions in 2024. Looking ahead, hiring demand across the industry is expected to remain very strong, in particular for talented, agile executives who evolve along with the industry.

“All in all, the conditions appear to be relatively positive for continued growth in the overall Financial Services sector, whether due to increasing penetration in an increasingly wealthy population, lower inflation, improving access to capital, almost unlimited innovation, the potential benefits of harnessing AI more widely… the list goes on,” said Peter Irish, chairman of The Barrett Group. However, he notes, “Political upheaval, geopolitical tensions, regulation, and global warming, on the other hand, certainly represent challenges to all of this positive momentum.”
