Press Release: August 06, 2017
The long-standing environmental partnership between pioneering waste management company, ACM Environmental PLC, and Brakes Group, leading grocery and fresh food supplier to the food service industry has been recognised at the highly prestigious National Recycling Awards.
The two organisations were delighted to be finalists in a very strong field in the Business Partnership of the Year category. Through their forward-thinking and ongoing work at all 56 Brakes Group sites across the country, ACM provides Brakes with a fully managed, complete, single source, waste and recycling solution for their business.
Travis Way, ACM Environmental’s Finance Director, said of the award, “It is great to be working with a company like Brakes which puts sustainability and environmental considerations high on its agenda. We have been Brakes preferred service provider since 2006. As with all ACM partners, the goal of Zero Landfill is our primary objective and at the beginning of 2016 the ambitious target of achieving this by the end of the year was set and achieved well ahead of time.
Producing circa 14,200 tonnes of waste per year across multiple sites, this significant environmental goal could only be achieved by working in close partnership with both the Group and individual sites to devise innovative and environmentally focused initiatives and we are delighted that this strong partnership was recognised by the National Recycling Awards and we were thrilled to be finalists in such a strong category.”
Speaking of the partnership and results achieved, Steve Webster, Indirect Goods & Services Manager at Brakes said, “We have been working in partnership with ACM Environmental for a number of years and together have ensured we reach our optimum environmental performance. ACM have a unique business model supported by a nationally-integrated network of recycling and reprocessing facilities that enable Brakes to minimise the amount of waste we produce, optimise recycling levels, eliminate the use of landfill whilst reducing our impact on the environment whilst significantly reducing our costs. ACM’s state of the art Environmental Services Portal (ESP) is invaluable in helping us manage compliance and end point disposal as well as monitoring our environmental statistics and carbon calculator across all our sites”.
With 19 different categories and the Editor’s Award, the National Recycling Awards cover every aspect of waste management: recycling, recovery and reuse.
The win comes as Brakes successfully undertook a stringent audit to be certified to the new ISO14001 standard – a great achievement for a business of this size and diversity.
These awards, judged by experts from across the industry, are the ones to win.
Robin Latchem, editor of Materials Recycling World, said:
"The glitzy awards evening may now be over but our NRA winners will be justly entitled to bask in the glow of their success for the next 12 months. A terrific night of celebration marked out a superb set of winners – we congratulate them all and thank everyone who entered.”
