The simplest online journey a child will ever take …
Award winning nursery makes childcare and education easy to see for nurseries and parents.

In December 2014, Learning Journals, a curriculum linked online system created and based in Edinburgh, won the prestigious NMT (Nursery Management Today) National Award for Nursery Innovation Of The Year. This is the second award won by Learning Journals this year – having also received the Scottish NMT Award in the same category in September. David (center) was presented the award by Boyzone’s Keith Duffy at the glitzy event held in central London.

The NMT Awards are judged by a panel of industry experts, who had this to say about Learning Journals:

“Learning Journals is very user friendly, time saving and produces a clear professional report of individual learning taking account of parental and child voice.”

Making childcare transparent for nurseries, carers and parents was no easy task, but Learning Journals have made it simple to record even the smallest details of a child’s day. The system itself is simple with ease of use for both nursery staff and parents alike; powerful in tracking experiences, outcomes and next steps; efficient with staff spending less time on administration and more time with the children and flexible enough to access anywhere with an internet connection using tablet, desktop, PC or Mac.

Learning Journals started life back in late 2011 at Arbor Green Nursery, Edinburgh. The owners, Natalie and David Clark, were discussing how difficult it was for staff to complete the learning journeys on behalf of the children. Using a paper and pen based system it was simply too demanding for staff to accurately document and track each child’s learning. The high standards are set by the nursery, the local authority, OFSTED, Education Scotland and the Care Inpsectorate.

Natalie with over 15 years experience in childcare management had taken Arbor Green to the ‘NDNA Scottish Nursery of the Year in 2012’ and Nursery World National ‘Nursery of the Year Runner Up 2013’. Natalie’s husband, David, worked for a leading marketing agency in Edinburgh as part of the conversion optimisation team – making it easier for people to complete web based tasks. With their expertise brought together, Learning Journals was born.

Already working with a number of recognised nurseries, David Clark, Learning Journal’s Founder comments:

“Over the past 12 months we have grown our community of customers to hundreds of nurseries across the UK. We have 10s of thousands of parents, children and staff actively engaging with the system. We are also trailing the system in primary schools. We are so proud that this all started almost by accident from our little family run nursery in Stockbridge, Edinburgh!”

Whilst record keeping has always been part of child care, never before has it been so easy for nurseries, carers and parents to see a child’s journey. Parents love it!
